Documenting Lives:
Liz Edlund

By Linda L. May

Although this California imagemaker photographed her first wedding in 2003, she fell in love with this medium more than twenty years ago and spent much of that time documenting her own life through pictures. It's only natural that at some point, her deep interest would evolve into a successful photographic career.

Liz Edlund, based in San Jose, California, specializes in people photography. If it involves people, Liz does it--weddings, portraits, special events like birthday and anniversary parties, boudoir, maternity, and even pets on occasion. Through the years, Liz has developed her own unique style and approach to her work, which clients seem to love--they keep coming back for more! MORE >>

Chicken Soup for the Photographer's Soul: Feeding 10,000 Creative Hearts!

By CharMaine Beleele

This will be the seventh year that I have begun my article on the annual WPPI Convention and Trade Show with a quote from the popular Chicken Soup series of books. This year's opening quote comes from Chicken Soup for the Entrepreneur's Soul, by Jack Canfield, Mark Victor Hansen, Dahlyn McKowen, John and Elizabeth Gardner, Tom Hill, and Kyle Wilson. On the back cover, the book is described as "a compilation of short stories from entrepreneurs, large and small, who share their experiences of success, failure, and courage, with helpful advice thrown in." These words also describe the WPPI 2007 convention experience, with its inspiring speakers, colleagues, sponsors and friends. With a menu of mentors well grounded in business and the photographic arts, this year's phenomenal convention defined photographers not only as artists, but also as entrepreneurs in profitable business ventures. Business Landscape
Becoming an Employer

By Fred S. Steingold

Many a small business has been able to survive for months--or even years--without employees. In some cases, the owners do all the work. In other cases, they get help from independent contractors. Then one day, the owners decide they really do need employees if their business is to thrive and grow.

So when that day comes, what steps should you take to do it right? The following checklist gives the basics. It can also help you if you've already started hiring workers and want to make sure you're not missing anything. MORE >>

WPPI's Rooftop Shootout

With Mike Larson and Brittany Hanson

Wednesday afternoon at WPPI in Las Vegas, after the trade show, there was a buzz going around about an innovative lighting seminar. It was held near Bally's, on and around the rooftop of the Platinum Hotel overlooking the whole city. California Sunbounce-sponsored international photographers Mike Larson and Brittany Hanson led and photographed a demo shoot for 100 photographers. MORE >>
