Blog Roundup

Our first featured blog this month comes from 2006 Hy Sheanin Memorial Scholarship recipient Catherine Hall; you can view her blog at catherinehall.typepad.com. As always, Catherine has been busy lately. She recently had her images displayed in Times Square for the second time. Last week, her photographs appeared on the Reuters Screen (the largest digital display in the world) and the NASDAQ Screen (21 stories high). More info here.

Another blog to watch is Nick Adams' Fotoblog Gumbo. Nick and his wife, Signe, are an extremely talented team working in and around Las Vegas, Utah and California. Nick describes their blog as "a mix of current work and play-hence the word gumbo." Be sure to check out their work; like Catherine, the Adamses are photographers to watch.

Excellent Lighting Resource: Strobist.com

"Less gear. More Brain. Better Light." is the motto or Strobist.com, a photography and lighting blog by Baltimore Sun photojournalist David Hobby. The Strobist approach to photography favors small off-camera flashes and outside-the-box thinking. The instructional content is targeted to pros and amateurs alike, and many techniques and examples are gleaned from real-world assignments. Strobist is also thoroughly interactive, featuring discussion forums and reader photos hosted on Flickr.com. If you're interested in traveling light and lighting creatively, it's worth your time to take a look.

Workshop Watch: Digital Weddings from A-Z

For anyone near northern California, this is one workshop you'll want to mark your calendar for. Join Fernando Basurto with special guests Gene Higa and Raymond Fosdick in Santa Cruz, CA, July 22-24. The all-day workshops will cover flow posing, lighting, marketing, attracting destination brides and a simplified workflow process including Photoshop techniques. The $399.00 registration fee includes continental breakfast and a complete lunch. More information is available at www.seworkshops.com.

Joe Photo's Trip to Russia

WPPI member and Awards Night host extraordinaire Joe Photo recently traveled to Russia for a life-changing experience. Joe explains:
A year ago I was deeply moved by the movie Born Into Brothels and the movement Kids with Cameras. With the help of FujiFilm I was able to get 111 One-Use cameras into the hands of the orphans. My lab Fotoworks has generously offered to process all of the film! We'll be sending the images back to the kids in the next few weeks. Most of the children had an absolute blast shooting. Keep checking back as I'll be posting some of the best images from the kids in the coming weeks.
Visit Joe's website for more information, including pictures from the journey.
